There is a utility called TweakUI included in the Microsoft Power Toys. It
gives you the option of turning on/off various things on the desktop (as
well as tons of other prefrences).
You can find the Power Toys at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.asp . There are some
other neat ones there (like a tray menu that shows everything on your desktop and about 5 others), but the Tweak UI will do what you want.
